湯坂 x かめや
2019年8月に誕生したyuzaka （開業時の名称はBar & Stay Yuzaka）は旧かめや旅館の建物がリノベーションされ生まれ変わりました。
「かめや旅館」は大正時代初頭から営業をしていた温泉旅館であり、湯治場として、周辺鉱山関係者の慰労場として、冬のスキー客の滞在場として、そして十和田湖観光の拠点として賑わった旅館と伝えられています。また資料には、土産用工芸品製作の指導でこの地区に招かれた職人や、温泉地を当て込んだ興行の人々、行商の人々の長期滞在場所としても使われていたとあります。上のイラストは、大正時代の実際のかめや旅館の写真を基にした館内の壁絵です。当時の鉄道駅から馬車で滞在客を運んできて、賑わっていた様子が見られます。
時代は過ぎ、観光客の減少と後継者の不在により、平成時代の初めには旅館営業が休業され、やがて住民も不在の建物となってしまいました。地域住民が日々利用する共同浴場の向かいにあるにも関わらず、活用の目処も立たず徐々に荒廃していく姿がただ存在する状況が続いていたようです。
一方、宿名の"yuzaka"は、同地区に江戸時代から続く旧家の屋号（湯坂）から採られています。この家も代替わりを機に消滅しかけていた家でしたが、子孫である現オーナーが都会から移住して引き継ぎ、「"湯"に通じる坂にあるお屋敷」という意味をもつその屋号を、こちらのゲストハウスへ改めて名付けることを決め、遠縁関係にあった当旅館物件の再生プロジェクトが2018年春に開始されました。
ロゴマークや建物正面に配った木格子のデザインも、この家（湯坂）の家紋をモチーフにデザインされています。
深刻な少子高齢化が進む当地ですが、この地が本来持っているものや、将来的に活かされるべきもの等、施設の将来像について検討が重ねられた結果、Retreat型（日常から離れ、心と体を癒す場所・拠点を提供する）ゲストハウスのプランが練られ、開業から時が経った今でも試行錯誤の運営・チャレンジが続いています。
大切にしている事
「土地の神々・森羅万象との調和」・「身土不ニ」・「持続可能」
古代からこの土地を守られている八百万の神々、森羅万象、全てに日々感謝し調和の心を大切にした宿作りを
もともとこの土地が持っているエネルギーを滞在中に最大限に感じ取っていただける施設を目指しています。
建物は昭和中頃の建築ですが、出来る限り元の古い部分を残してリノベーションされています。やむを得ず解体された部分もありますが、そこから出された梁や古材の再利用や、無垢材だけの使用、全て漆喰や珪藻土で塗り直された壁が特徴です。古い建具類も修繕しながら大切に利用し、一部のものは一旦表面を研磨後、柿渋にここ十和田地区で採られたべんがらの染料を混ぜたもので塗り直されています。
ロビーやリビングなどのゲストが共用するスペースは、旧壁を撤去するなどして広々とした空間を確保し、居心地の良さを追求しました。計画当初より欠かせない存在だった内湯は、建物向かいの共同浴場に源泉がある温泉（大湯下ノ湯）を源泉掛け流しで供給しています。立て替えによって、当地の伝統や風習とモダンセンスが混在する木造の入浴施設として生まれ変わりました。
ダイニングラウンジ(Dinning KUROMANTA)では、身土不二、テロワールを大切に、土地のエネルギーを体感いただけるお料理をご提供しています。自生する野草や山菜を必要な分だけ使わせていただき、また、自然を大切にされている地域のエコファーマーの作る厳選した食材や、伝統的な手作りの発酵調味料、綺麗な湧水を使用して、手間暇かけて全て手作りご用意しています。
施設で使用するものや備え付けのアメニティ類についても、環境負荷の少ない製品やフェアトレードで作られた物を使用するなどし、Ethical消費を心がけ、またお客様へもご協力いただいています。
そして館内には、かつての旅館時代に使われていた道具類や、現オーナーの先祖代々が所有していた古いものなどが多用されている一方、新たに備え付けられた備品・調度品類には、出来るだけ地域の作家達の手による品々が置かれています。
食材、器、道具、テーブルや椅子、壁など・・宿の細部にまで宿るものに心を通わせ大切に使わせていただいています。
Yuzaka x Kameya
Yuzaka was born in August 2019, and the former Kameya Ryokan building has been renovated and reborn.
"Kameya Ryokan" was a hot spring inn that had been in business since the early Taisho era, and was popular as a spa, a comfort center for people working for the surrounding mines, a winter stay for skiers, and a base for sightseeing at Lake Towada. Records also state that it was also used as a long-term stay for craftsmen who were invited to this area to provide instruction in making souvenir wooden crafts, people who came to perform for tourists, and peddlers.
The illustration above is a wall painting inside yuzaka based on a photo of an actual Kameya Ryokan at the Taisho era. You can see how it was a lively place, with guests brought in by horse-drawn carriages from the railway station at the time.
As time passed, the inn business was closed at the beginning of the 1990s due to a decrease in tourists and the absence of a successor, and the building eventually became empty of residents. Despite being located across the street from a public bath used by local residents on a daily basis, it gradually fell into disrepair with no prospect of its use.
On the other hand, the name "yuzaka" is taken from the name of an old family (湯坂) that has existed in the same area since the Edo period. This house was also likely to disappear once brfore, however, the current owner, a descendant, moved from the city and took over. We decided to rename this guest house after its name, which means "a house on a slope leading to hot water". The current yuzaka was originally owned by a relative, but a revitalization project for this building began in the spring of 2018.
The logo mark and the wooden lattice design on the facade are based on the family crest of this house (湯坂).
As this area is experiencing a serious decline in birthrate and aging population, we had repeatedly considered the future vision of the facility, including what the area originally has and what should be utilized for the future. Ever since we opened, we have continued to face challenges and operate through trial and error.
What we cherish is;
Harmony with the whole universe, whole cleatures, Indivisibility of the body and the land where produce foods which make body, and Sustainable.
(We create our inn that value the spirit of harmony and daily gratitude for the whole creation and animas that have protected this land since ancient times. )
We aim to create a facility where you can feel the energy that this land originally has to the fullest during your stay.
We are renovating the building from the 1960s, keeping as much of the original old parts as possible. Some parts were unavoidably demolished, but we reused the beams and old woods from those areas, and used only solid woods. The walls are all repainted with plaster or diatomaceous earth. The old fittings have been refurbished and used with care, and some of them have been polished and repainted with a mixture of persimmon tannin and colcothar collected here in the Towada area.
In spaces such as the lobby and living room, old walls were removed to create spacious spaces and create a sense of comfort.
The indoor baths, which we prioritized, are supplied with hot spring water flowing directly from the source in the communal bath opposite the building. By rebuilding it, it has been reborn as a wooden bathing facility that combines local traditions and customs with modern flair.
At the dining lounge (Dinning KUROMANTA), we offer dishes that value local ingredients and terroir, allowing you to experience the energy of the land. We use only the necessary amount of wild plants and wild vegetables, as well as carefully selected ingredients made by local eco-farmers who value nature, traditional handmade fermented seasonings, and clean spring water. We take the time and effort to prepare everything by hand.
Regarding the items used in the facility and the amenities provided, we use products that have a low environmental impact and are made through fair trade, and strive for ethical consumption, and we also ask for the cooperation of our guests.
The inside of the building uses tools that were used during the Ryokan's days, as well as old items that had been owned by the current owner's ancestors. On the other hand, as much as possible, the newly installed equipments and furnitures are made by local artists. We pay close attention to the details of the inn, such as ingredients, utensils, tools, tables, chairs, and walls, and use them with our hearts.
